Before I joined the IMDB community, in 2009 I adopted a dog named Max. Max bit me everyday for a year. His canines were dulled etc. I had a true abused dog. A year and a half later and multiple bites he become my friend. Now he is so old he forgets where he is and I need to put him down. It breaks my heart so badly. Why are our friendly granted so little life?

My parents had to put down our almost 15 year old miniature schnauzer last month. Yesterday would have actually been her birthday. It was really heartbreaking knowing I would never see her again. I think it would have been even harder if I was still living there.

I put down Max this afternoon. It was a little less difficult than I expected because last night he ended up biting his tongue and when I woke up to take him out at 4am he was covered in blood. I made my peace with putting him down right then and there and called the vet at 8am and set up an appointment.

Max died at 11:20 am central, he was 12, or 13 or even 14 as when I adopted him 10 years ago the shelter thought he might 3 or so. Will never know.

I probably kept him alive a bit to long because I was attached and had lost my favorite cat Larry, six months ago. I made sure to stay with Max the entire time until his heart stopped beating, so if he was still cognisant of what was happening he knew I never abandoned him.

I am sure it will hit me way harder tonight when I no longer have to assist him to go out and go to the bathroom every few hours. I had been taking him out at 1am and then waking up around 4 am and then 7 am every morning for about a year now, as he had hip arthritis and needed the help.

This was Maxy in the good days.

Buddy was sad today. While he and Max were never pals due to age difference, Buddy was very good around Old Max.

In truth I was right. It hit me tonight.

Normally at about ten I would take Max out for bathroom, then he would come and sit at my feet while I either watched tv or played video games. Buddy goes to bed at 11 so past then it would just be Max and I.

Tonight there was no Max.Its been years since there was no Max. I missed it so much I felt guilty. I know I will get another dog for Buddy, but damn, losing Max smacked me like a linebacker on the goal line tonight.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog!!! I'm obsessed with my dog, and he's getting older, so I can't even imagine when that day comes. Truly one of the hardest things a person has to do, but you made the right choice. He was a beautiful dog and he's living a lot easier now.

I lost my little buddy back in 2013. It's never easy. He was 12 when he died, but I was devastated even though I grew up on a farm and wild, feral animals coming and going (dying or disappearing without a trace) was a regular thing. Zekey wasn't a farm animal, though... he was my animal and a member of our family.

You have my condolences. Just remember that you gave your's a good life. Far too many aren't as blessed. Sad

Its very difficult. Thanks for everyone's kind posts.

Max was my first dog(that I had on my own) and he was a project. He was pound puppy who bit me every day for over a year. Someone abused him, but eventually I broke that wall. He even attacked Buddy when I got Buddy...and he lost. After that they loved each other and poor Buddy is hurting these days.
