PostSubject: Ranking songs by my favourite band - The Beatles   Sun Mar 12, 2017 5:10 pm

Well, this is no easy task, since I think 90% of their songs are amazing. The other problem is that, this list would probably have been different last year, and I imagine it will differ again a year from now. The most surprising thing for me is that not a single song in this list of 15 comes from what people often rate as their best album, Sergeant Peppers...as it turns out, I'm of the opinion that Revolver is their best album, and this is one opinion which is unlikely to change.

15.I'm only sleeping
The dreaminess of this song is sublime...
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up stream)

14.We can work it out
I love the conflict within the lyrics...
Life is very short, and there's no time
For fussing and fighting, my friend
I have always thought that it's a crime
So I will ask you once again

Try to see it my way
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong
While you see your way,
There's a chance that we may fall apart before too long

13.Help!
This is the song that started it all for me, I was about 11 when I first heard it....I instantly wanted to hear more.
(Now) And now my life has changed (My life has changed) in oh so many ways
(My independence) My independence seems to vanish in the haze
(But) But every now (Every now and then) and then I feel so insecure
(I know that I) I know that I just need you like I've never done before

12.Come together
I'd love to know the people whom Lennon had in mind when he wrote those lyrics....
He got joo joo eyeball
He one holy roller
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what you please

11.Across the universe
Poetically, the best lyrics written by Lennon...
Thoughts meander like a restless wind
Inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe

10.You really got a hold on me
The Beatles actually covered a lot of songs by artists they were influenced by. I like to think that 9 times out of 10, they did a cover justice. A lot of people will state that Twist And Shout was their best cover, and while I agree that it is a top track...almost iconic...I prefer their version of this Smokey Robinson classic.
I don't like you
But I love you
Seems that I'm always
Thinking of you

9.Things we said today
I love the structure to this song. At the start, the idea seems to be that he is regretting whatever was said...but it turns out that this is not the case, simply the fact that, whatever it is/was, will only make them stronger for years to come. If only.....
Someday when I'm lonely
Wishing you weren't so far away
Then I will remember
Things we said today

8.Revolution (not the album version, but the B-side version to Hey Jude)
I love the riff in this song, while the lyrics are still true today as they were 50 years ago...except maybe the reference to Chairman Mao.
But if you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait

7.Eleanor Rigby
The only beatles song in which none of them play any of the instruments on the record...but who cares when the harmonies are this good?
Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came

6.You like me too much
I imagine this song would not feature in most people's lists when it comes to Beatles songs, but I love the simplicity of it...and that piano intro...something you would expect to hear in a New Orleans blue bar.
You'll never leave me and you know it's true
Cos you like me too much and I like you

5.You've got to hide your love away
Such a wonderful song and what makes it even better is the story behind it...
How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say...Hey you've got to hide your love away...

4.Helter Skelter
The song that basically started the "heavy metal" trend/sound... allegedly. On the same album as "Julia", again, the depth of their range is something else.
Do you, don't you want me to love you
I'm coming down fast but I'm miles above you

3.Strawberry fields forever
People tend to forget that it was only 4 years prior to this that The Beatles were singing She Loves You and I want to hold your hand, the difference in style, the way and the speed with which the band evolved is simply staggering.
Living is easy with eyes closed,
Misunderstanding all you see

2.Here there and everywhere
In my opinion, the most beautiful love song ever written. It was this song that inspired me to start teaching myself the piano. I can play it now...
Each one believing that love never dies,
Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there

1.In My Life
Simply the best song ever. Nothing I can say will do this song justice.
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before,
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
In my life I love you more.

I really, really love Eleanor Rigby. Also, I love that you didn't put Hey Jude on your list. I've always found that song kind of overrated.

Things we said today is perhaps the opposite of Hey Jude....extremely underrated !!

The problem with Hey Jude, while it's far from being a bad song, is that it goes on for far too long...

And today I am mad at myself for having forgotten about "Girl" from Rubber Soul.....

I love Hey Jude because Paul wrote it for Julian. Poor Julian never got much love from his own father (who never hid how much he loved his other son), so that song must be really special to him. Sean Lennon may have gotten all the love from his dad, but Julian will always have one of The Beatles most popular (if not the most popular) songs because of Paul.

I really don't know The Beatles sadly. I mean I know of their tracks and their amazing influence, but the sound's just not for me I guess so I've never immersed myself in their music. I love Fiona Apple's Across The Universe though, which I believe was a remake of a Beatles song!

Oh, Fiona does do a really nice cover of that song, I remember someone sent that in a season of Cherry Idol and I really liked it.
